Coach – Marty Skele

Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself and your story.

Call me Mart! Married to my beautiful wife Sheri and daddy to my amazing kids Heart (10), Haven (7) & Huxley (2). I was born into the fitness industry. My parents owned and operated two of the first gym/fitness/squash clubs on the Sunshine Coast through the late 80’s and 90’s. Through my childhood this was all I knew and I loved it. My earliest memories were of being at the gym looking into the aerobics classes, the music blaring with 80’s hits and all these fit people jumping around in hot fluro! I’d then wander over to the weights area with all the big guys pumping iron and remember I wanted to be just like them.

Why did you choose to enter this space of Health, Wellness & CrossFit?

I was a PT in a regular gym and actually fell in love with the Olympic Weightlifting aspect of CrossFit. It was such a rewarding & challenging experience trying to improve both the Clean & Jerk and Snatch. I then started doing CrossFit WODs and teaching clients CrossFit so it was a natural progression to find a space of our own and commit full time. It was then that I realised how amazing the “community” part of CrossFit really is and it’s what I’ve been in love with ever since!

Favourite WOD or Exercise?

When I’m fit I love the short, intense WODs like Fran, Diane & Grace. When I’m not so fit, I like to lift weights and stay mobile and strong! 😁

Who or what inspires you and what has been the main influence to your journey?

My main influences early on were my parents. If it weren’t for them I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing today. Since the beginning I’ve learnt from so many coaches and still am!

Favourite food?

I’m very routine with my food so I can pretty much eat the same thing day-in day-out. But, for my last meal on earth – would have to be slow smoked beef, crispy roast potatoes, fried rice and a fruit crumble/coconut ice cream for dessert that my wife Sheri makes for me.

Favourite drink?

Kombucha!

Favourite getaway destination?

I love Bali. I thoroughly enjoy the little family weekend getaways in our vintage 1976 caravan Matilta too!

Favourite motivational quote?

Love a good motivational quote! “To learn to succeed, you must first learn to fail” Michael Jordan

What’s one OCD trait you have?

I have an obsessive habit of keeping our floor clean of dust and fluff at home (the Dyson permanently lives in the kitchen!).
